Agent’s ‘typo’ mistake put Luton flats in London

The estate agent which drew unwelcome national newspaper headlines after advertising two-bedroom flats as being in London when in fact they are some 35 miles away in Luton, has apologised.

RE/MAX said it was a typographical mistake and not an attempt to mislead.

The agent had advertised the £550,000 off-plan apartments in Luton, Bedfordshire, as being “close to one of the world’s leading financial districts and in one of the most cosmopolitan areas of London”.

It added: “Stepping inside your Flowers Way apartment you are transported to a luxurious haven – leaving the day’s stresses far behind.”

However, further down, the advert does seem to say that the development is not in the capital, using the phrase “just 30 miles from London”.

According to the local Luton paper, the site backs on to a pub, a casino and Luton Crown Court, while the flats would look across the Park Viaduct carriageway.

Tim Marshall of RE/MAX said of the description: “It should have read Luton as opposed to London.

“I have personally checked and corrected when necessary all properties we have advertised in Luton.

“We apologise for the error and trust that this typographical error can be treated as such and was not a deliberate attempt to mislead the public by ourselves.”

He added that the advert was aimed at investors from China and Malaysia.

A spokesperson for RE/MAX said: “RE/MAX London sincerely regrets the erroneous description that has been posted by one of our franchise offices, Re/max Property Centre.

“This was clearly inaccurate and does not comply with our strict company guidelines, which are based upon providing the consumer with transparent and correct information.”

I’m not clear on something. Is that £534,000 for one flat … or does the whole development add up to £534,000? It can’t be over half a million quid just for one bed flat surely?  Someone somewhere is having a laugh, aren’t they? And another thing, where do these Chinese and Malaysians get the money from? What Money Laundering checks are being made?
