Agents warned as housing demo is planned in Brixton today

A large housing demonstration due to be held in Brixton this evening is putting local agents on the alert.

Previous demonstrations have included targeting Foxtons, with action including graffiti, a sit-in and smashed window, and taking other agents’ signs.

While there is no intelligence to suggest a recurrence and agents are not on the official itinerary, the demonstration is due to start at 6pm at Lambeth Town Hall and is likely to be attended by hundreds of people.

The protest is against regeneration in Brixton and the local council’s decision to demolish an entire housing estate of 306 homes, including 100 privately owned houses.

Their owners say they will not be offered full market value when the council demolishes their homes.

One said: Lambeth council are actively taking people off the property ladder and it’s criminal.

“We’ve been told we will be offered shared equity or help finding a private rental, but we have worked, saved and gone without to get out of private renting.”
