House give-away competition worries advertising watchdog

Advertising on Facebook which promoted a competition giving away a house has been banned.

Real Hot Property’s “#HouseGiveaway” offered a home worth up to £150,000.

Two complainants to the Advertising Standards Authority said that conditions of entry and the closing date were changed during the promotion, and challenged whether it had been run fairly.

Real Hot Property, which did not respond to the ASA’s inquiries, had originally required participants to become paying members of Red Hot Property’s website before being entered into a prize draw.

Different levels of membership provided different numbers of ‘free’ entries to the draw.

According to the complainants, the rules were then changed to allow consumers to receive one free entry to the draw by becoming a ‘standard’ member at no cost.

A further change allowed consumers entry who had booked a hotel or holiday through Real Hot Property.

Last October, the closing date for the draw was November 28, but in December this changed to April 28, 2017.

The ASA also noticed other issues to do with the prize draw, including the fact that none of the posts on Facebook included a link to the full terms and conditions.

Real Hot Property has been told not to run the promotion again. The matter has been referred to the Committee of Advertising Practice’s compliance team.
