Housing minister and new shadow take to Twitter for a policy spat

In a sign of the times, the housing minister and his new shadow counterpart have locked horns for the first time on social media.

Yesterday, housing minister Brandon Lewis tweeted: “Interesting the new Labour shadow housing minister left office with lowest levels of house building since 1920s.”

John Healey, the new shadow housing minister who was for 11 months the ninth and last of Labour’s housing ministers, spat back saying: “If only hot air built homes, Brandon! Homes built lower in 4 of last 5 yrs than when I was housing min, despite recession.”

Oh dear.

Still, at least it gives us a foretaste of the quality of debate to come.

* Away from Twitter, it was yesterday announced that Richard Harrington MP will be responsible for co-ordinating the resettlement of 20,000 Syrian refugees in Britain. He will report to both the Home Secretary and to Communities and Local Government, suggesting that the role will include a prominent housing rule that could encompass the private rented sector.

No doubt more rubbish for private landlords to have to cope with.  Most will be weary given our role as pseudo border agency officers! So where is my additional pension for these added tasks and will it be a final salary pension for these  Government imposed jobs?
