Industry big hitter Jon Notley quits Zoopla to ‘pursue new venture’

Industry big hitter Jon Notley is leaving ZPG where he has been chief commercial officer.

His departure is at the end of this month, said a ZPG spokeperson yesterday. It appears there will be no successor in his role.

There is speculation that Notley may have been squeezed out. Notably, there was no warm tribute but instead a hint of internal politics.

The ZPG spokesperson yesterday said: “Mark Goddard was announced last year as MD of our Property division so there is no replacement for Jon who will be pursuing a new venture.”

It is not known what that new venture could be, although rumours suggest a start-up.

While reasons for his departure or what he will be doing next are currently unknown, with his unrivalled industry knowledge and contacts, Notley would be in keen demand.

He has been with Zoopla for almost six years, since August 2011, having joined from its then rival Digital Property Group, where he was group sales director. The Daily Mail-owned Digital Property Group operated Primelocation and FindaProperty among its brands.

The following year, the OFT gave clearance to the merger of Zoopla and the Digital Property Group, meaning that Notley was once again helping to propel those brands once again.

Zoopla was also previously sales director with FindaProperty, when it was a stand-alone business before its sale to the Digital Property Group.

Altogether, Notley has been a key figure in the property portals industry for over 12 years, and is very well known to many in the estate agency industry.

Last month, he took the stand in the Competition Appeal Tribunal hearing, which was looking into potential competition issues arising from OnTheMarket’s ‘one other portal’ rule.

Notley’s Linked In profile still shows him in position at ZPG, but he no longer appears in the ZPG executive team line-up.

ZPG has also confirmed that Charlie Bryant has been appointed as managing director of data.

Bryant, a new member of ZPG’s executive team, will continue as CEO of Hometrack, the business acquired by ZPG in January.

Gosh – that’s quite surprising news. I’d got him down as a ZPG guy forever!

I’ve known Jon for many years and have always been impressed with his enthusiasm and fantastic work ethic -always available and a great attention to detail.

I’m looking forward to hearing about his new plans.

Never met the guy but you only have to look at the Zoopla share price over the last few years to know he’s been a big hitting CCO. Will be interesting to hear what is next

Top man. Portals for 12 years, it’s little surprise. Enjoyed working/partnering with you over the years and thank for your support. Good luck with the new venture. No doubt we will be reading about it on here first!

I find it very odd that Zoopla have not paid tribute to Jon. I rarely have a good word to say about Z these days but there is no doubt he was one of the architects of their rapid rise and for the company not to acknowledge that at least seems somewhat churlish.

I’m sure they would have done if it was amicable..if it was like a divorce and if he is running off with a more glamorous new love and going to harm them it isn’t a surprise….ZPG will want it to look like a cloud over his head. It’s human nature and as businesses are run by people and all of their vanities, insecurities and of course hatred! Wonder if he will join Bartlett from Chestertons on a ski holiday…

Always had a lot of time for Jon despite him being on the ‘dark side’.

Straight talking and clearly very talented.

wish him well unless he goes to a competitor in which case may a thousand tapeworms blight his world ….

I agree. One of the few ‘good guys’ at ZPG…I think they will miss him.

Poor form not providing him with a tribute after his undoubted positive impact, although we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors I suppose.
