Landlord body accuses Welsh housing minister of refusing to listen

The Residential Landlords Association has accused the Welsh housing minister of refusing to meet it or any other landlord body.

The RLA has spoken out after the passing of the Welsh Government’s Renting Homes Bill.

The RLA said it is “deeply concerned” that the minister, Lesley Griffiths, has refused to meet with it or any other landlord body despite repeated requests since her appointment to the housing brief.

RLA vice-chairman for Wales, Douglas Haig, said: “Ministers in Cardiff will now be implementing a set of radical changes to the private rented sector that will cause many landlords to consider if it is worth continuing in the market.

“At a time when we need more homes to rent this will only make it more difficult still, especially for young and vulnerable people to access the homes they need.

“Given this, it is deeply concerning that the minister responsible for housing has so far failed to meet personally with bodies representing landlords to understand the true impact of the Government’s policies.

“Even at this late stage we urge the minister to find time to meet to discuss how we can work constructively to meet our shared agenda to kick out the criminal landlords, whilst supporting the vast majority of good landlords to provide the homes we need.”

    “Ministers in Cardiff will now be implementing a set of radical changes to the private rented sector that will cause many landlords to consider if it is worth continuing in the market” that is the whole point,  the  government is trying  to  control BTL and force stock to be made available. Not  for purchase  for home ownership but for financial investors, housing associations and company investors all of which are  seemingly exempt from the pressures being put on the industry.

    You can’t implement a right to buy scheme without having a means to replace stock. If you back track on the lucrative build to rent scheme because of social & political pressure something somewhere has to give. The small investor landlord is easy to tax and engineer out of the sector. Everyone needs to hold their nerve till May 2020 and attend to matters then. Put up with the taxes and the pressure,  get and talk to a good accountant and play the game the way the big boys do.

    The true criminal landlords will avoid and evade. With new laws being introduced just days after they are made show the sheer arrogance or the current law makers.  This is all trying to deflect the true failures of government to provide adequate social housing and rapidly rising population from the failure to meet their own targets on immigration making the homelessness situation worse.

    I’ve set up a petition on the Welsh Government’s website (see hyperlink below), to try and get them to reconsider their ridiculous legislation. I would appreciate it if all agents/estate agents and landlords that will be affected by this ensures that they get as many people as possible to sign the below- it will be interesting to see if we can get enough numbers whether or not we still live in a democracy.
