Landlords’ Barometer – #26: Welcome to the future

Welcome to “Landlords’ Barometer #26” where I present trending topics for landlords, taken from the Property Tribes community discussions:

1. VIDEO: An inspiring and insightful interview with Google about property tech

Myself and my husband Nick were asked to host the Future Prop Tech event that took place in London last week. It was an incredibly inspirational day that confirmed to us that tech is accelerating at an exponential rate and that video and mobile are prime movers in the property tech space.

One of the keynote addresses was by Scott Sinclair of Google, who gave some insights into where property tech was heading and why other estate and lettings agents are not your competitors.

I took the opportunity to record an interview with him. On watching it, I realise how profound and insightful some of his observations are!

2. Is this the end of BTL as we know it?

I share my 15 predictions as to the future of BTL and the private rental sector, following the Summer Budget 2015 and tax changes that saw the Conservatives stab landlords in the back!

3. VIDEO: Legionella compliance for landlords – the truth!

There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about landlords’ obligations with regards to legionella risk assessments.

David Smith, landlord and tenant solicitor and Policy Director to the RLA, gives a definitive view on this topic.

4. VIDEO: An interview with Mal McCallion, CEO of RaterAgent

Another speaker from Future Prop Tech 2015, Mal McCallion, talks about how third party review sites can reward agents who supply a quality and professional service.

5. VIDEO: Buying BTL investments in a limited company structure, with Stephen Johnson, M.D. of Shawbrook Bank

The recent tax changes for landlords have prompted many of us to consider putting our portfolios into a limited company structure or buying new acquisitions through a limited company.

Stephen Johnson, M.D. of Shawbrook Bank, shares the pros and cons of doing this.

6. EVENT: See you at the NALS Annual Conference!

The NALS Annual Lettings Conference is taking place at the Mermaid Theatre in London on November 12 with a wide array of top-class speakers to help agents find business in these challenging market conditions. The event is to be hosted by Kate Faulkner and is an opportunity to work “on” your business, not “in” it!
