Landlords’ Barometer – #37: Landlords put their plans on hold after Brexit

Welcome to “Landlords’ Barometer #37”.

We’ve had two major events since my last column, namely the Tenant Tax Summit in London and Brexit.

So today I update on these two trending topics:

Landlords have been quick to react to the Brexit news with multiple discussions surrounding this topic:

1. How will Brexit affect your property plans?

Many landlords are considering putting their property activities on hold to wait for the dust to settle.

2. Ten reasons why Brexit could be good for landlords

I share ten positives for landlords that have come out of Brexit … so far. Why not share this with your landlord clients if they are feeling a little wobbly?

3. Lettings agents need to wake up to Section 24

I am dismayed at the lack of awareness of Section 24, not only by landlords, but also by lettings agents. I believe that agents should play a key role in educating their landlord clients, in order to retain them, and offer a more “holistic” service, and they should also get involved in supporting the Judicial Review to protect their livelihood.

4. Interview with Lord Flight

I was astonished to learn from Lord Flight at the Tenant Tax Summit that many Tory MPs do not understand how Section 24 will impact on the PRS. To use his words – “It’s bug*ered!”.

5. Lenders are slashing mortgage rates to tempt landlords

The Stamp Duty surcharge, Section 24, and now Brexit means that lenders are reducing BTL mortgage rates to tempt landlords to purchase more properties.

6. Property Tribes YouTube channel tops 200K views

In fact, it’s now over 212K views since this article was written! I share some of my favourite videos from over the years, including my recent exclusive interview with Cherie Blair QC about the Judicial Review, which has already had 3K views.

Thank you for reading my column and I hope there will not be such a long gap until my next one!
