Mansion Tax and how NOT to add value to your home

Given the publicity Labour is generating after announcing its Mansion Tax plans for properties over £2m, it is not surprising to hear of a number of owners of properties worth around £1.6m wondering whether to go ahead with their renovation plans.

After all, there is little point in doing up a modest three-bedroom terrace in Chiswick if you simply boost its value by around £400,000 and give yourself an annual tax bill of about £11,000.

So we were very amused to see a tweet from Noel Flint, head of London residential at Knight Frank, that hit the nail on the head.

“Expect we will now have to prepare list of top 10 improvements that WON’T add value to your home,” he wrote.

Ideas, anyone?
