Two new custodial tenancy deposit protection schemes announced

Tenancy deposit protection is to be beefed up, alongside other new measures announced today by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

The Deposit Protection Service has been awarded a new licence, and there are to be two new custodial scheme from next year across England and Wales

One will be run by The Dispute Service (TDS) and the other by MyDeposits, both of which currently run insurance-backed schemes.

CLG also announced a £5m fund to help up to 65 councils tackle bad landlords, and said that 3,000 criminal landlords could now face further enforcement action or prosecution.

Communities Secretary Greg Clark said the fund would help councils with a large proportion of private rented stock in their area, including beds in sheds.

Councils will be able to use the money to increase inspections of properties, carry out more raids, initiate more prosecutions, and demolish prohibited buildings.

Clark said: “We’re determined to keep the country building and increase the supply of good quality homes that families want, both to buy and for rent.

“Key to this is rooting out the minority of landlords in the private rented sector that let out poorly-maintained and unsafe properties to vulnerable tenants, making their lives a misery.”

CLG said there are more than 4.4m households renting privately.

Since 2013 nearly 40,000 inspections have taken place in properties, with more than 3,000 landlords now facing further enforcement action or prosecution.

Not sure from this how Mr Clark is helping building and increasing the supply of properties for rent and sale?

It all sounds good, but I’m wondering where the vulnerable tenants, whose lives are being made a misery, will live after the minority of bad landlords and their sub-standard accommodation have been dealt with…. Has Mr Clark also addressed that issue?

A prelude to discontinuing insurance based schemes? I hope so.
