Trade union to put pressure on local authorities to build council houses

The housing crisis in the south-east has become the focus of a fact-finding roadshow by Unite, the country’s largest union led by Len McCluskey.

It is designed to hear the concerns of local people and campaign for a big boost in council house building.

Monday’s  itinerary took the month-long roadshow to Ramsgate, Kent, and yesterday’s to Crawley. It has also been to Slough, Hastings and Portsmouth, while tomorrow it reaches the Isle of Wight.

Unite said the south-east faces chronic housing problems with sky-high house prices, lack of affordable housing and little protection for tenants from unscrupulous landlords.

The aim of the roadshow is to give people an opportunity to highlight their concerns and put pressure on local authorities to do more to address the housing crisis.

The south-east ‘Housing Crisis Roadshow’ is the build-up to a regional day of action on Saturday, October 1, when activists will be taking part in a mass coordinated action, calling on the government to address the housing crisis hitting communities across the south-east.
