Thirteen agents in just one borough warned they could be prosecuted

Thirteen letting agents in one borough could face prosecution after allegedly not complying with the law that requires them to display their fees and information as to tenancy deposit protection.

The 13 agents have been issued with a “notice of intent” by Thurrock Council, in Essex.

The council’s Trading Standards offices visited 33 letting agencies in May, meaning that over one-third have been issued with the warnings.

Councillor Rob Gledhill, leader of the council, said: “These requirements provide essential information to residents and it is important that they are implemented across the borough.

“Despite officers engaging with the letting agents and offering advice and guidance, some are not doing what is legally expected of them.

“I encourage those agents who have been contacted by Trading Standards to respond fully and make this information freely available to residents.”

EYE has repeatedly heard anecdotal information that a number of letting agents in some towns and cities are failing to comply and would be very interested in your feedback.

EYE’s editor  recently turned down an article on “best practice” from an agent after finding it did not display all of the required information on its website.

We were told it was an oversight.
